By now, you've probably realized that employee engagement is one of the number one priorities of business growth and development in any industry. Without it, you are likely to find yourself with a team of unmotivated, underappreciated, and dissatisfied employees who may be spending their free time searching for better opportunities.
Aside from the fact that dissatisfied employees aren't likely to stay in your ranks, causing your retention rate to suffer, they are also more likely to become negative brand ambassadors who are your company's toughest critics.
It's worth setting goals to reach a level of employee engagement that leaves your team feeling purposeful and proud of their work, as well as to ensure that they will continue to contribute to a positive work environment. But how do you reach that goal? What steps can you take to lead you closer to success?
This is where the employee engagement roadmap becomes important. As with any roadmap, it will show you how to get from your starting point to your destination, combining short-term actions with long-term objectives.
Know Your Destination
You can't take any journey without knowing where you're headed. So, first and foremost, when planning your employee engagement roadmap, it's important to first consider where you'd like to end up. What goals do you hope to accomplish? What kind of culture are you trying to create for your company?
Take a hard look at the way your team is currently operating and evaluate the factors that may be holding you back from reaching your full potential as a team. Set your goals to eliminate the roadblocks that are standing in the way of achieving a more satisfied, engaged and productive environment.
Consider the Employee Perspective
When setting goals for your team, you'll need to tap into some empathy in order to understand what your employees need to feel more engaged in the workplace. Consider every factor that affects their daily life, such as:
- Purpose
- Culture
- Mission
- Incentives
- Leadership
- Growth & Development
Establish and answer the questions that your employees may find themselves asking about their place within the company. Some of those questions may include:
- What is the company mission?
- What are our current objectives?
- How will we reach those objectives?
- What is my contribution to reaching those objectives?
- How can I improve?
- Are there opportunities for me to grow?
Answering these questions from the perspective of your employees will help you understand how you can better engage with them on a daily basis. If you're struggling to answer the questions from their point of view, don't just give up. Ask your employees for their feedback and tap into the wealth of knowledge you have at your fingertips. Who knows better about the state of employee engagement within your company than your actual employees? Don't squander the opportunity to learn from their experiences.
Plan Your Pit Stops
On every journey, you have to plan for pit stops along the way. Sometimes it's to refuel, other times it's to reroute and change course. The same is true for your employee engagement roadmap. You've got to plan for pit stops to assess your progress and make adjustments.
Create smaller goals to accomplish towards your larger objective so that you can not only continue to adapt as circumstances shift but also so that you can celebrate small victories along the way. Trying to accomplish a large goal can often feel daunting and it may be difficult to see your progress. But by creating pit stops along the road to your destination, you will be able to track your successes and see positive growth.
A boost in employee engagement can take your team from struggling to succeeding, as your team will be more satisfied in their work and their purpose within the team. Sit back and watch as your productivity rates skyrocket and your turnover rates plummet with every step toward that final destination on your employee engagement roadmap.
